Each year NANA and the Nicaraguan Medical Mission take teen volunteers to assist us with our annual mission trip. They provide services at the children's cancer hospital and at our mobile clinics. This year, one of our teen volunteers has now become an MD herself!
Congratulations to Doctor Krista Gomes!
Krista received her Doctor of Medicine degree from Florida State University College of Medicine during Commencement Ceremonies on May 16th, 2021.
When asked what was the deciding factor in choosing a career in medicine, Krista stated “I always knew that’s what I wanted to do”, and credited a large part to family influence. During the interview Krista stated “being in medical school was difficult but also very rewarding”. She is grateful to all the people that mentored her along the way. She will soon start her residency at the University of South Florida in Tampa Internal Medicine Program; with rotations between Tampa General Hospital, The VA Medical Center, and Moffitt Cancer Center.
Krista has been surrounded by people in the medical field most of her life, including her father, Dr. Joseph Gomes who is an Emergency Room physician, her mother Dr. Ronie Gomes, PhD , is in the counseling and therapy field and her grandmother Marie Berry Holder is a nurse.
Krista is one of our special youth volunteers for Nicaragua Medical Mission. She started volunteering along with her parents and grandmother at the age of 15. Every year a group of volunteer doctors, nurses, teachers, and youth volunteers travel to Nicaragua to give free medical care including free medications to people in underserved communities in Nicaragua. She was one of those volunteers as long as her school schedule permitted it. She credits these mission trips for opening her eyes to the plight of people in underserved communities who lack basic medical care, and stated that she wants to dedicate her time to serving people in communities like these.
Congratulations Krista, we are very proud of you and wish you much success in the future.
